Connecting Career Development and Mental Health: 5-P Conversations

Overview

This professional resource includes core concepts, basic communication skills on well-being, 5-P (5 Process) Conversations, and skill practice. While originally a presentation for educators, there are several practical activities educators could incorporate into classroom practice to support career development and well-being.

This is a set of PowerPoint slides from the Cannexus Pre-Conference presentation from the New Brunswick Professional Development Workshop held November 22, 2022. They provide helpful fundamental rationale for educators linking positive mental health and career development.

Objectives

  • To create awareness for educators and learners linking career development and positive mental health.
  • To provide research-based core concepts to educators who may be new to career.
  • To incorporate career prompt conversations into all curricular areas to support learner well-being.

Instructions

Depending on your experience with career, you may choose to read all of the presentation slides to enhance your background knowledge. Or, you can simply focus on Slide 5 (“A Few Foundational Ideas”) and Slide 6  (“8 Core Career Messages”).

If you would like a good class activity, read slides 28-30 for background and then have learners participate in the 5-P (5 Process) Conversations. There are prompts and rationale provided for each of the 5 categories.

The 5 P’s are: PRIDE, PASSION, PURPOSE, PERFORMANCE, POISE

Suggestions: Focus on one “P” each day and make this activity last 5 days. Or have learners choose one of the 5 P’s that most resonates with them. As the educator, you could use these prompts in multiple ways depending on your goals and curricular focus.
