Ability New Brunswick’s Peer Mentorship Program

Overview

This program supports New Brunswickers living with a mobility disability in their journey to adapt and thrive as they deal with a new injury or diagnosis.

The goal of this program is to increase access to early intervention mental health services by helping people with a mobility disability and their families adjust, adapt and thrive as they deal with a new injury or with the ongoing challenges of living and aging with a mobility disability.

Mentor volunteers will have personal experience with a mobility disability and have made positive personal adjustments. Mentors may provide one-on-one, group or family support by listening, sharing experiences and providing information and tips. The Peer Mentorship Program is focused on person-first interactions that focus on building leadership capacity in the community along with autonomy and support. There is nothing like talking to another youth who has dealt with a similar disability such as Cerebral Palsy, an amputation or another condition.

The Peer Mentorship program also organizes social events, either in person or virtual, for both mentors and mentees to be able to socialize and make new connections in their community.

Objectives

The goal of this program is to increase access to early intervention mental health services by helping people with a mobility disability and their families adjust, adapt and thrive as they deal with a new injury or with the ongoing challenges of living and aging with a mobility disability.

Peer Mentorship is based on the idea that people will turn for help to others who share the same problem, others who have been “through it.”

Instructions

This resource is intended primarily to support New Brunswickers living with a mobility disability.

Ability NB’s Peer Mentorship team is responsible to recruit and screen possible Mentors, provide adequate training and support before being paired up with a Mentee.

When a match is being made, we look at pairing up individuals with a similar disability type and who also share similar interests to ensure the match will be a positive experience.
