A lesson in the myBlueprint toolkit that explores career misconceptions. The lesson supports the educator through a series of activities and discussion surfacing common misconceptions about specific careers. It encourages students to consider potential obstacles they may have not considered and provides a goal setting activity to overcome their obstacles.

Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students:
- Will be able to differentiate between common misconceptions and realities related to various career paths.
- Will be able to dispel stereotypes about careers in different industries.
- Will be able to consider career paths from a more open-minded perspective that doesn’t focus solely on a single aspect like salary or education requirements.
Instructions
The Lesson is accompanied by a slide show that provides step-by-step instructions through the lesson activities. (before, during, and after)
- Introduce the main topic to the class: Career Misconceptions and share the lesson goals (slide 2)
- Present the minds on activity (slide 3)
- First, ask students to take a moment to identify and discuss common workplace stereotypes they’re aware of.
- Individually, they will spend 2 minutes identifying one workplace myth (e.g., “construction workers aren’t educated” or “all lawyers are wealthy”).
- Afterward, break the classroom into small groups of 3 or 4 and share the myths they’ve identified.
- Within each group, students will choose the most prevalent myth to share with the class.
- As a class, engage in a discussion about why workplace myths exist and why it’s important not to unquestionably believe them.
