Future Wabanaki / Future NB / AVENIR NB Experiential Education Website

Overview

Future Wabanaki is a partnership between NB employers, universities, Indigenous students, and the Government of New Brunswick. It supports Indigenous university students to have equal access to meaningful and valuable real experiences with local employers, while connecting employers with top New Brunswick talent.

Future Wabanaki | Avenir NB | Future NB ’s primary goal is to position New Brunswick as a place where all students and employers can access rich learning opportunities and new ways to collaborate with one another, through experiential education. They focus on:

  • Leveraging student talent to contribute to New Brunswick’s workforce while studying.
  • Enhancing employer and student engagement in the future of work in New Brunswick.
  • Increasing the number of skilled students ready to join the workforce, helping New Brunswick employers fill their labour market needs.
  • Increasing the numbers of students staying and working in NB.

Experiential Learning has been a part of the Wabanaki people here since time immemorial. Hands-on, pride fulfilling, and culture-based ideologies must come into play for an Indigenous student to succeed in their career and in life. This is part of the Holistic way the Wabanaki people believe will bring forth true success.

  • To support Indigenous learners to attend post-secondary education.
  • To leverage student talent to contribute to New Brunswick’s workforce while studying.

Instructions

Future Wabanaki / Avenir NB / and Future NB is a combined website supporting youth with rich an authentic experiential learning opportunity. This website can be helpful for learners, educators, and employers to bridge academic learning experiential learning by:

  • Providing opportunities to experience multiple career pathways in a practical work setting prior to graduation.
  • Highlighting the link between academics and the world of work, including high-demand sectors, skills, and global competencies.
  • Expanding students’ community connection, networks, and the occasion for mentorship.

Future NB aims to provide all students in the province’s public-school system the chance to engage in experiential learning opportunities prior to graduation. Possible opportunities include:

  • Field trips/familiarization tours.
  • Employer speaking opportunities.
  • Job shadowing.
  • Classroom activities- subject matter experts, problem-based learning activities.
  • Co-op placements.
  • Mentorships.

Some of the requirements for the Future Wabanaki program include:

  • Students must be a registered full or part time student.
  • Be of Indigenous ancestry.
  • Participate in meetings and focus groups and complete reflective holistic evaluations as required.
